Q: What is the difference between F&B Service and Culinary Skills? top
A: WSQ Food & Beverage Service Courses are for service staff working in restaurants whereas WSQ Culinary Skills Courses (Chinese cuisine) equip individuals with the skills to be chefs.
Q: How do I know if I am right for the job? top
A: To be a successful professional, you must possess an interest in F&B industry. Chefs must be physically fit and willing to work in a hot and humid environment. Service staff will be required to have a pleasant personality and able to interact with guests. Candidates are required to pass an interview conducted by SCI.
Q: How do I apply for the course? top
A: Applications may be done through the email or in person. Please complete the student application form and submit via email to enquiries@sgci.com.sg or mail it to SCI. Please attach the following documents together with the application form:
• Certified true copies of educational certificates, transcripts
• 1 passport sized photograph
• NRIC or work permit photocopy
Q: What are the eligibility criteria for the courses? top
A: Secondary school education or WPLN Level 4 (Workplace Literacy and Numeracy) is required.
Q: Can you share with me more about the courses offered? top
A: There are 4 levels of training, Certificate -> Higher Certificate -> Advanced Certificate -> Diploma.
Certificate courses consist of 7 units, upon completion of each unit, the students will be assessed for their competency. Students who are classified as “not yet competent” will given additional lessons to prepare them for the re-assessment. Upon completion of each unit, students will be given a SoA (Statement of Attainment). Upon completion of all the units, students will be awarded the WSQ full-qualification Certificate.
Q: Are there classes conducted in other languages besides English? top
A: Classes are conducted either in English or Mandarin.
Q: What is the typical class size? top
A: For Culinary Skills courses, the class size ranges from 10-20 students. Class sizes for culinary skills courses are kept small to ensure that all students are provided with a cooking station to practise their skills.
For F&B Service courses, the class size is 18-25 students.
Each class will be supervised by one trainer who possesses the relevant course content knowledge and expertise. SCI has two full time culinary trainers and 3 full time F&B service trainers.
Q: Are there Full-time and Part-time classes? top
A: Both Full-time and Part-time classes are available. Night classes are also available.
The duration of the Full-Time certificate courses will be about 2 months for Culinary Skills and 1.5 months for F&B Service. Part-time courses may last between 5 – 6 months.
Lesson Times
Full Time – 5 days per week (9am – 6pm)
Part Time – Between 1-3 days per week (9am – 6pm)
Night classes – 2–3 evenings per week (7pm - 10pm)
Q: What is the typical working hours in the F&B industry? top
A: The working hours vary between different restaurants and F&B outlets.
Q: Will students be given financial assistance? top
A: Singapore citizens or PR can qualify for course fee subsidies of up to 90%. Students enjoying subsidies may also qualify for training allowance. Students who enjoy the subsidies are required to work in the F&B industry for 6months (full-time) or 12months (part-time) immediately upon completion of the course.
Q: I am a member of NTUC. Can I get a subsidy from NTUC? top
A: No. We are not in collaboration with NTUC for WSQ Courses.
Q: Can I get subsidy from CDAC? top
A: The WSQ courses conducted by SCI do not qualify for subsidies from CDAC.
Q: What is the starting salary range for employees in the F&B industry? top
A: The starting salary range for kitchen staff is $800 – $1200 while service staff is $1000 – $1300.
Q: Will the institute help me find employment after I complete the course? top
A: Yes. SCI will assist to arrange for students to be interviewed by the restaurants or F&B companies with vacancies. Students are expected to perform well at the job interviews and their performance at the restaurants will be monitored for 6 months. Students are expected to be selected for a job within 3 attempts of job-matching.
Q: Can I continue to attend the Higher to Advanced Certificate courses before I start work? top
A: Only students who are not enjoying the course fee subsidies can continue. Students who have enjoyed the subsidies are required to work in the industry first for 6months (full-time) or 12months (part-time) before they can return to the institute to pursue higher level courses.

Q: What is the Refund Policy? top
A:
Withdrawal with Cause
Subject to Force Majeure, the student shall be entitled to immediate withdrawal from the course by giving written notice to the SCI of his/her intention to do so under the following circumstances:
i. SCI fails, for any reason, to commence the course on the commencement date;
ii. SCI fails, for any reason, to complete the course by the completion date
iii. SCI terminates the course for any reason prior to the completion of the course; or
iv. SCI is in material breach of its obligations
Refunds for Withdrawal with Cause
SCI shall, as soon as practicable after receiving the student’s notice of withdrawal (and in any event no more than fourteen (14) working days after receiving such notice) refund the student:
i. the entire amount of the tuition fees and;
ii. the non-tuition fees and/or additional fees
Withdrawal without Cause and Refunds
Where the student withdraws from the course from any other reason, SCI shall, as soon as practicable after receiving the student’s notice (and in any event no more than fourteen (14) working days after receiving such notice) refund to the student based on the following:

Deemed Withdrawal
A student who transfers from one course to another course with the PEO shall, for the purposes of this Clause, be deemed to have withdrawn from the course and the provision of Clause "Withdrawal without Cause" shall apply unless otherwise agreed between the PEO and the student.
Deposit
No deposit is payable on courses hence there is no refund on deposit.
Q: What is the Student Redress Policy? top
A: Students may seek redress by informing the trainer who will try to resolve the issue. Failing which, the trainer will refer the case to management for consultation and management will take necessary action. In the event the student is not satisfied with the management’s action, SCI will refer the student to CASE for mediation.
Q: What happens to the fees that I have already paid if the school is unable to continue operating? top
A: Student Protection Scheme (SPS)
The SPS serves to protect the international students’ payments if a Private Education Organisation (PEO) is unable to continue its operations. It also protects the student if the PEO fails to pay penalties or to return fees to students arising from the judgments made against it by the Singapore courts.
Student Tuition Fee Insurance
All foreign students must enter into the Standard Foreign Student Contract with the PEO. Students entering into the Standard Foreign Student Contract are covered under the Student Tuition Fee Insurance Scheme.
SCI's Student Tuition Fee Insurance is run by NTUC Income (Insurance Account No. 1000000056). The Student Tuition Fee Insurance indemnifies students for their tuition fees paid in advance to the PEO for the following events when the PEO is unable to continue operations due to insolvency and/or regulatory closure or if the PEO fails to pay penalties or to return fees to students arising from judgment made against it by the Singapore courts, or upon death or total permanent disability of the student.
